Movement Is Life

Movement is life and life is movement.

Getting and being fit is simple, but it has been made complicated due the abundance of products, programs, books, and gurus out there touting their special secret formula. The essence of fitness is to get up and move everyday. The more we move the healthier we will be and while we never know how long we will live, movement will add more life to the years that we have.

When looking at exercise it really can be summed up with a couple of movements: pick heavy things up (preferably overhead) and put them down, elevate heart rate, squat, bend, rotate, push things away from you, pull things towards you, and this should all be done from an upright standing position. That's it. If your workout consists of these core movements every time, you will maintain your ability to move.

The problems arise when we cease to move and begin to live sedentary lives. As we age we don't lose the ability to squat because our joints are old, although this is what many people will say, we lose the ability to squat because we don't squat. For proof of this all you have to do is look at people who are in their 80s and 90s in third world countries. They can all perform a deep squat. This is how they sit and it's also how they go to the bathroom, which is pretty beneficial. But, in westernized countries what happens? We have chairs and as we get older raise the toilet seat up. Basically, from the time we start school (sitting for 7 hours a day in a chair) we slowly stop moving and this results in us not being able to squat and move in general.

Get up everyday and move! It's one of the best things you can do for your body and your health.
