Wounded Warrior July 4th Charity Workout

Defined Fitness plans to donate their services by hosting a workout on July 4th, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. to assist service members who have been injured in the line of duty. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the nonprofit organization Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), and will support a full range of programs and services for this generation of injured veterans and their families.

Over 47,000 servicemen and women have been injured in the recent military conflicts. In addition to the physical wounds, it is estimated as many as 400,000 service members live with the invisible wounds of war including combat-related stress, major depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Another 320,000 are believed to have experienced a traumatic brain injury while on deployment.

WWP’s 18 programs and services are uniquely structured to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement.

The workout will be at Defined Fitness located at 11885 Perry Highway in Wexford and will start at 9:15 a.m. on July 4th, 2013. There is no fee to attend although donations for Wounded Warrior Project will be collected, and you do not have to be a member to attend. Also, Defined Fitness will be donating 10% of the profits from the sales of their Red, White, and Blue Recovery Shakes at the event. The workout is suitable for all fitness levels. If interested in attend call Defined Fitness at 724-934-2000 to reserve your spot or for more information.

The Benefits of Functional Exercise

So you’re ready to begin an exercise routine. But where do you start? This can be very confusing for many people due to the abundance of choices and conflicting information. In truth any thing is better than nothing, but with that being said not all exercise is created equal and most people who are thinking about starting an exercise program are looking to improve the way they look and feel.

If this is you your  best choice is functional exercise. Functional exercise focuses on exercises that load the muscles while working them through full range of motion and movements, increase heart rate at the same time, and use an interval approach. While many popular fitness routines e.g. running, yoga, Zumba, and spinning incorporate a some these none of them incorporate them all and utilize them to the fullest extent. Rather these forms of exercise work more as a compliment to functional exercise.

To improve the way you look and feel you need to:

1.Load the muscles. One of the biggest benefits of functional exercise is that is allows you to lift weight and stimulate the muscles.

2. Work the muscles through a variety of movements.

3. Increase HR using intervals. Research has shown time and time again that the use of intervals reaps better results than continuous aerobic exercise, in fact one study has shown that 20 minutes of interval training 3x per week for 16 weeks got 9 times better results than 60 minutes of aerobic training done 5x per week for 20 weeks. The most popular form of interval training is HIIT (high-intensity interval training)  where you exercise for a set amount of time and then rest for a set amount of time circuiting through a group of exercise for a set number of rounds. But, the truth is interval training is anything where you work hard for a period of time and then rest for a period . This equals strength training

Defined Fitness will be hosting a Functional Exercise workshop on Saturday June 22nd, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with sessions starting on the hour. The workshop is free to attend and open to the public. If interested call Defined Fitness at 724-934-2000 for more information and to reserve your spot.

Jump Farther

Since the release of our DF Fitness Challenges we have received many questions from members asking how they can improve their scores on each challenge. This week we take a look at the Long Jump. To perform this challenge you start by standing with your toes behind the line and then jump forward as far as you can. Wherever your closest heel lands is the distance marked. Oh and you have to stick the landing, demonstrating control of the jump.

What does this challenge demonstrate? The Long Jump is a test of explosive strength. This is important  because how quickly you can react and move explosively is directly linked to levels of health. The more explosive you are the healthier you tend to be on average. Also, the faster your body's muscles can contract (ie explode) the leaner your body tends to be as well, and that is what you are after anyhow, right?

So here are a few ways to improve your jump distance.

1. Jump Squats - jump up (explode) as high as you can swinging your arms for momentum, then land soft by squatting back down. To take this to the next level you can hold a medicine ball or dumbbells for added weight.

2. Bunny Hops - all these are are shorter hops jumping forward on the balls of your feet.

3. Box Jumps - place a box of any height in front of you, the higher the box the more challenging, from here sink your hips and jump up onto the top of the box, again stick the landing. Once this is easy with body weight try a higher box.

4. KB Swings - the stronger your hips are the farther you'll be able to jump.
